Leo,
Thanks for posting about the CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOWs. I have listened for a few minutes each night for the last week, so they must have just gotten in. This is the earliest here by a couple days by my personal records.
If tradition holds, at least one singing male will be very reliable here through the end of May and then steadily quieter until early July. While regular in several areas in the county and elsewhere on the Western Shore coastal plain, this might be the closest reliable bird for many Maryland birders. The bird usually gets started right at dusk and is also active pre-dawn. Because this is a very small and local population, I consider tape use unnecessary and not appropriate here. Anyone who hopes to actually see a Chuck-will's-widow would be far better off trying the lower Eastern Shore's marshes or Assateague Island. As Leo described, please limit parking to the first gate on the right. The second gate is also OK for parking, but doesn't tend to have calling Chucks.
Thanks!
Bill
