This morning's bird walk at the McKeldin Area of Patapsco Valley State
Park featured most of the breeding species of the park. There were very few
pure migrants. It was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed the half-day
hike. Among the notable birds:
Canada Goose 1 on a nest on a large boulder in the middle of the North
Branch
Wood Duck 1 female with at least 5 downy young in the woods apparently
trying to get to the river
Broad-winged Hawk a pair soaring
Spotted Sandpiper 2 on the South Branch
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 perched
Acadian Flycatcher 1 heard singing on the Baltimore Co. side; 2 silent
birds on the Carroll Co. side
Phoebe only 1 where we should have seen several pairs
Crested Flycatcher 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 on the Baltimore Co. side
Parula common, 1 seen collecting nesting material from tent caterpillar
nest
Myrtle Warbler 1 heard only
Black-throated Green Warbler probably 2 birds singing, one seen
Yellow-throated Warbler 1 singing at its usual place on Marriottsville Road
but heard only
Cerulean Warbler 2 heard only, perhaps seen by some
Black-&-white Warbler at least 6 heard only
Redstart at least 4 with 2 adult males seen
Worm-eating Warbler 3 singing with two seen, one very close
Ovenbird at least 6 with one seen very close
Louisiana Waterthrush 4, one seen by a few
Scarlet Tanager 4 singing with one male seen close
White-throated Sparrow 3
Indigo Bunting 1 heard only, probably on the Carroll Co. side heard from
the Howard co. side
Baltimore Oriole 2 with one male seen
