A work-related trip took me to Cambridge and naturally I tried to squeeze
some birding in at nearby spots (Thursday, 4/28/11). At the Blackwater NWR I
had Purple Martins just past the visitor center and a singing Baltimore
Oriole further down the road.
The ponds had good numbers of both Greater (~4) and Lesser Yellowlegs(~10)
and 10 or so Least Sandpipers and 1 Common Snipe. Maybe 20 or so
Green-winged Teal also there. I continued to Elliott Island Rd where I heard
one Prairie Warbler and plenty of Common Yellowthroats. In the marshes, I
saw again both Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Blue-winged Teal, 3
American Black Ducks and 2 Gadwalls were nice. At one point, I am 99% sure I
heard a Brown-headed nuthatch calling and pecking in the pine stands along
the road. Anybody know if they occur regularly along there? I drove down to
the Fishing Bay, where I had 2 Marsh Wrens as well as one Seaside Sparrow
showing nicely.
