My wife and I did the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Driving Tour from Jug Bay to Merkle this afternoon. The weather was beautiful and the birds were active the whole way. Highlights included a singing Bobolink atop a Sugar Maple near the Merkle Visitors Center, Grasshopper Sparrows in the Merkle fields, Summer Tanagers near the old airfield at end of Croom Airport Road, and a singing Kentucky Warbler just north of Selby's Landing. Other birds included Baltimore Orioles at several stops, Yellow-throated and Yellow Warblers at the observation tower, a few very close Hooded Warblers and American Redstarts. Shorebirds seen either at the Merkle pond or from the observation tower included Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpipers, Killdeer, and a Spotted Sandpiper.
