Anna Urciolo and I birded Caroline and Wicomico Cos. Saturday before and
after Kathy Calvert's excellent Frederick Bird Club trip to Tuckahoe SP
and Adkins Arboretum. Highlights of our independent birding were:
Caroline:
Cherry Lane: singing VESPER SPARROW (exactly 7 miles east of
intersection with Crouse Mill Rd.)
Red Bridges Road: KENTUCKY WARBLER, SUMMER TANAGER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER
Tanyard Marsh: LOTS of shorebirds. Did not pick out anything unusual,
but there were over 50 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS, as
well as a few SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and both YELLOWLEGS. We also had
3 LEAST TERNS. There was probably something else out there but the
light was bad.
Wicomico:
Ellis Bay WMA/Muddy Hole Road: LOTS of mosquitoes limited our out of
car birding. SUMMER TANAGERS seemed to be everywhere, and it was also
nice to hear BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES and see PURPLE MARTINS and BLUE
GROSBEAKS.
Waterview: one CLAPPER RAIL gave its tick notes repeatedly to close out
our day.
Good birding!
