This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, May 10, at 11 AM.

Top birds this week are WHITE-FACED IBIS in VA, MISSISSIPPI KITE, probable
BLACK RAIL, and PURPLE GALLINULE in MD, RUFF in DE, GLAUCOUS GULL in VA,
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER in DC, SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER and PAINTED BUNTING
in MD.

Other birds of interest include REDHEAD, GLOSSY IBIS, COMMON MOORHEN,
PARASITIC JAEGER, and warblers.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co VA, on May 9.
Also on May 9, a MISSISSIPPI KITE flew over Hughes Hollow, in Montgomery Co
MD. Hughes Hollow also had a heard-only BLACK RAIL on May 7, and the PURPLE
GALLINULE seen there last week continued through May 9, providing good views
for many. On May 4, a male RUFF was spotted at Bombay Hook, Kent Co DE, and
on May 3, a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Chincoteague NWR. An OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER was singing in Rock Creek Pk, in NW DC, on May 8. A
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen May 3 north of Eden Mill Nature Center,
in Harford Co MD, and along Wilt Rd in Carroll Co MD, an adult male PAINTED
BUNTING was spotted on May 3.

Several birds were found in surprising places, or at unexpected times. A
late REDHEAD was on Lake Churchill, in Germantown, Montgomery Co MD, on May
4. Also on May 4, a GLOSSY IBIS was seen at Fort Armistead Pk, Baltimore.
Lilypons, in Frederick Co MD, hosted a COMMON MOORHEN on May 3, and a
PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from shore at Assateague NWR, Worcester Co MD, on
May 7.

At least two dozen warbler species were reported, but the distribution was
spotty; a number of observers reported low species counts in surprising
places. However, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was a nice find at Lk Roland,
Baltimore Co MD, on May 3. CERULEAN WARBLERs have disappeared from many
locations in MD, but certainly not from Susquehanna SP, Cecil Co, where 10
were seen on May 7 and 6 were spotted on May 8.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports before midnight Monday, identify
the county as well as state, and include your name and a Tuesday morning
contact, either e-mail or phone.

Thank you for calling, and GOOD BIRDING.
