MD Osprey:
A clarification regarding changes to the MD Review List ...
When the committee removes a species from the review list (or changes
review categories), our intention is to still review any reports that
we have received (or that we can elicit) for that species from during
the period of time when it was reviewable. These species, however, do
drop lower in our priorities after they are removed from the review
list, but the priority doesn't go away.
For example, in 2005 the committee removed American White Pelican
from the review list because they had become annual and there were
reports from all over the Eastern Shore during the few years prior.
However, we still do plan to review the batch of reports in our queue
for this species that were seen prior to it's removal from the review
list. Again, that's our plan, just not our highest priority.
The same applies to these recent removals; specifically, for Common
Murre (we are still trying to sort out all of the reports from this
winter's pelagics) and Common Teal, we will review all of the reports
submitted.
This approach to reviewing reports from during the time period when
they were reviewable, even though the species are now no longer
reviewable, drives many of my requests to people for details/photos
of older sightings (older reports of Anhingas, Clay-colored Sparrows,
Yellow-headed Blackbirds, etc.). We are just trying to be thorough in
our canvass of historical records.
I am working on a new data structure that will allow us to better
generate reports of when species, over time, were added to, removed
from, or changed in status on the review list.
Hope this makes sense.
Thanks!
Phil
