Hi Everyone,

Wayne Baumgartner and I decided to explore another rarely birded site in Washington, DC.  Saturday morning found us in Anacostia at Fort DuPont.  While Anacostia has a reputation for not being safe, I must admit, in the forested park itself, we saw no one else and we felt ok.  That being said, it did drizzle/rain about 75% of the time.

Fort Dupon't habitat is excellent.  It has a mix of mature forest, brushy scuby areas, and open lawn.  The deep woods seem to be in great conditon and we found lots of good populations of native plants, flowers, and understory treess and bushes.  Certainly there are deer here, but it seems they haven't had the same impact as other areas where they tend to eat the understory bear.  We were also lucky to see large stands of Mountain Lauriel (Kalmia latifolia) in full bloom!

So how was the birding?  Slow during the rain, but we found a number of nice warbler flocks.  In total we had 53 species in total including: 12 Warbler species & 3 Vireo species.
