John Williamson and I birded this morning from Edward’s Ferry to White’s Ferry along the C&O Canal for today’s May Count (including birds seen along River Road as we drove from White’s Ferry to Edward’s). The morning was dreary overcast and quieter than we would have liked. Nonetheless, we saw 62 species (John may have added some after I left him at noon). John has birded this stretch for the May Count for many years. Not many warblers this year. Unusual birds included a Great Egret, three American Black Ducks, and two Warbling Vireos. House Wren, Wood Thrush, Downy Woodpecker, and White-breasted Nuthatch were fewer than in years past. Two Barred Owls entertained us by calling back and forth. Good numbers of Indigo Buntings, Yellow-billed Cuckoos, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Great Crested Flycatchers, Acadian Flycatchers, and Red-eyed Vireos. The complete list is below.
