Here's an historical factoid for you ...

In November 1922, Dr. Alexander Wetmore of the Biological Survey,
carried out field work into the status of introduced quail in Maryland.

Wetmore reported that in the two prior years (1920 and 1921),
approximately 22,000 (!!!) "Mexican quail" [a subspecies of Bobwhite]
were turned out in Maryland. (Approximately 31,600 were introduced in
Pennsylvania since 1916!). However, Wetmore determined that "a very
large part of the introduced birds die or are killed without having
bred, in other words, the number of Mexican quail that succeed in
establishing themselves under the new conditions that they encounter
seems relatively small."

Quail in Maryland. (Unpublished; dated 23 Jan 1923)
