I heard some pileation this AM that sounded kinda close. I looked out the
back door and spotted the Pileator on a tree next to the drive. He then flew
to the stump of a poplar we eliminated a few years ago (a safety issue) and
began knocking huge chunks of bark off of it. I got some looks at it thru my
8x bins at a distance of about 30'.
Then I got greedy. I went for the scope. Ours is a nice Leica with a 32x
wide angle lens. I thought that a Pileator at that distance would look real
neat thru it. Gone. The bird left while I was setting it up at the back
door. Such is life.

However we once had a Great Horned Owl on the boardwalk trail at Cape May
turn and look right into it at about 50'. That one gave us chills. Love it
when a bird fills the whole scope view like that.

As a consolation the hummer flew in and fed from the feeder just a few feet
away while I was standing there wondering where my pileator went.
