Hi Everyone,

With the MOS conference in Garrett Co., many people had the opportunity to enjoy some of Maryland's rarest and most local breeding species. Just as a reminder, some of these species are declining and may be very sensitive to disturbance. Please be especially careful if you visit any nesting sites for species such as Golden-winged Warbler, Henslow's Sparrow, or Upland Sandpiper. These species occur at only a small number of sites in Maryland and any disruption of nesting would be a grievous offense. Please refrain from any use of playback at these locations and do not try to approach closely for photos. In some cases, there is risk of damaging or destroying a nest. In other cases, there are private property concerns.

Fortunately, I haven't heard any negative stories from this weekend. However, as communication allows increased awareness of sensitive species, self-policing by the birding community will become increasingly more important. Please set a good example and gently remind others if you think a birding behavior isn't appropriate. When posting about such sites, it doesn't hurt to include a note about recommended extra care. I have started putting notes in my species comments in eBird reports, as some birders now receive "eBird Needs Alerts" for species they haven't yet reported to eBird in the state. These reports include the species comments (but not report-level comments), observers, date, and a link to a Google map. By including a note about site sensitivity, we ensure that the receiver, who could be rather new and not plugged into MDOsprey, knows to act with extra care.

I personally have no problem with limited tape use, but I would encourage everyone to keep it to minimal, reasonable levels. I think it's most important to totally avoid it at sensitive nesting sites and at heavily trafficked birding sites. Please also consider the comfort of other visitors at any site.

Thanks!

Bill
