Braving overgrown trails and forging streams without complaint, eleven
members of the Howard County Bird Club joined me on a three mile hike
through the Sykesville section of the Patapsco Valley State Park this
morning. No one was even lost this year, so the walk was a big success!
Notable scrubland/edge species:
Willow Flycatcher 1 (heard only)
Great Crested Flycatcher 7
Blue-winged Warbler 3 close view of chase
Prairie Warbler 3
Blue Grosbeak 1 (heard only)
Orchard Oriole 3
Baltimore Oriole 6
Notable woodland species:
Acadian Flycatcher 11
Yellow-throated Vireo 3 (heard only)
Veery 2 (heard only)
Worm-eating Warbler 4 (heard only) 3 separate locations
Louisiana Waterthrush 4
Notable absences:
Cuckoo (neither species heard all spring)
Yellow-breasted Chat (briefly heard in early spring, but usual 2-3 pairs are
not present).
Observed bird dramas: a pair of bluebirds successfully reclaiming a nest box
from House Sparrows. A cloud of enraged birds (mostly swallows and
kingbirds) chased a Cooper's Hawk out of at least four trees during a 10-15
minute period. No rest for the feathered wicked!
