Very cool Tyler. They aren't birds but hopefully bird food. They look like heat shimmer or smoke coming up from the stump.

The weekends heat also brought us a pair of weird insects too. On Sunday evening around dinner time I looked up into our skylight/dormer window in the master bath to see a large insect clinging to the screen. Looking in Kaufman's Field Guide to Insects of North America, I found it to be a burrowing Mayfly (Hexagenia sp., bottom of p. 55) imago. It says they "are among the largest mayflies and are sometimes among the most noticeable of alll insects." It was far enough away to use my bins on.

And last evening as I was on the deck grilling dogs, I noticed another weird insect clinging to the screen of the kitchen nook window. I pulled out Kaufman again but it took Alli's Peterson guide to track it down to family, then I was able to find it in Kaufman. It was a fishfly (family Corydalidae, genus Chauliodes sp.), a male as pictured on p.225, with "feathery" antennae. They're in the same family as dobsonflies.

2 "life" insects!

OK, they're not birds but they have wings. I was out doing streams today at SERC
and noticed something odd about a standing dead stump. There was a swarm of bugs
above it. I grabbed the work camera and flipped it over to video. The camera is
ld so the quality isn't great but it was really something! The termites were
rawling up out of the dead stump and when they got to the top, they took off.
hortly after I stopped shooting, it tapered to almost no bugs at all. Timing is
everything!
