I found a 1st summer Yellow-crowned Night Heron in the trees lining Schoolhouse Pond this morning. The bird flushed up to an exposed branch about 20 feet up and perched nicely in the open for about 10 minutes, allowing great views. The bird than flew towards the back of the pond and the shrubby bushes and wetland vegetation. I got good views of the bird's all black, thick set bill and long legs (in flight). I didn't see the bird when I entered my building about 15 minutes latter, but as far as I know it has not left the pond. Of course, Black-crowned Night Herons are rare but fairly regular visitors to the pond during the warmer months, but this is only my second or third Yellow-crowned Night Heron at the pond.
