Just after sunset on Monday I was walking through Dumbarton Oaks Park and stopped to try to figure out how many Wood Thrush were calling. There seemed to be 2 near me calling back and forth plus one some distance away. I never confirmed the count, but while I stood there one of them flew up to a perch in the open and began singing, hopping from one branch to another in the crown of a small tree away from the "forest" edge. After about a minute another Wood Thrush started singing an almost-echo from the area where I had heard the 3rd bird call. The first singer then stayed at one perch, clearly silhoutted at the top of its tree, and the call-and-response singing continued until I moved and the leader retreated to the cover of the forest.
(sorry for the late post, I tried earlier & was unable to send a message)
