Good morning all,
Not much to report around the yard recently, but I have been watching the local crows get harassed almost daily as the fly across the yard, through the cherry trees that border our property and into the neighbors fields. As they reach the tree line along the edge of our yard, Eastern Kingbirds will fly out and attack them relentlessly until they are well out of the area. I knew there must be a nest around, but haven't had much time to look for it. Well, yesterday morning I took the time and finally located it high up in a huge mulberry tree (in fact the largest mulberry tree I have ever seen), which is in the middle of the neighbors cow pasture area, between his house and the hay fields. I watched as a kingbird flew out from high in the tree to attack a passing crow, then saw it alight high in the tree, and that's when I spotted what looked like a large nest. I continued to watch and eventually saw the bird fly into the nest. It's far enough away that even with a scope, all you can see is a tail sticking out when one is sitting on the nest, but pretty neat to find nevertheless.

P.S.; the mulberry tree is larger than the Norway Maple which is right beside it, and I estimate it to be maybe 40-50 feet tall. It really is enormous, and until I looked at it closely yesterday, I thought it was a maple or oak tree. It must be the mother of all the mulberry saplings I have growing around here. I don't know if it's a red or a white mulberry, but looking in Sibley's tree guide, it appears, by shape, to be a white mulberry. I would need to get closer to know for sure though.
