Wednesday night, 6/08 Jeff Culler and I headed to the marshes of Dorchester
County.
On the way down we first stopped at Old Skipton Rd (Rt 662) in Talbot County
for the previously reported Warbling Vireo. We saw and heard the Warbling
Vireo around 4:15 pm plus Baltimore Oriole and 2 Cliff Swallows.
Our next stop was White Marsh Cemetery, Trappe also known a Hole-in-the-wall
Cemetery. The Dickcissel was at near the fence on the north side of the
cemetery.
We then found two more Dickcissel's on the north side of Egypt Rd,
Dorchester County. At Blackwater NWR we saw a pair of copulating Red-headed
Woodpeckers at Stop #3 off the Wildlife Drive. The American White Pelican is
still off Key Wallace Rd.
Our most productive stop was along Elliott Island Rd about .5 mile from the
light yellow house. Here we got Least Bittern, Clapper Rail, Virginia Rail,
Black-necked Stilt 2, Willett, Short-billed Dowitcher 3, Great Horned Owl,
Saltmarsh Sparrow, and Seaside Sparrow. Marsh Wrens were very numerous.
Two miles south of Henrys Crossroads we heard Chuck-wills-widow's. Our big
misses were that we did not hear a Black Rail or moorhen at Moorhen Pond.
Biting flies and mosquitoes were out but not as bad as I have seen it there
in the past.
