Hi all,
Yes!  It seems bats are scarce this summer; two weeks ago I saw  1 Little Brown bat at dusk. Nothing since.

FYI, DNR Biologist Dan Feller first documented White Nose Syndrome in caves in western Maryland on March 5, 2010.  The winter season of 2009-2010 is the first known occurrence of this disease in Maryland and since then, Feller and other bat biologists have been working to document and monitor the spread of the disease.  More information can be found at:http://www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/pressrelease2010/031810.asp

Hello Rick,

White Nose Syndrome arrived in Maryland from the north within the past year and once it is found in an area, this cold-loving fungus kills over 90% of hibernating bats, awakening them before insects can be found.   Scientists have not found a practical approach to treatment.

A youth-oriented information page can be found http://savelucythebat.org/
