I spent a few hours in NW Carroll County this morning. The highlight was
a tally of 14 Dickcissels, all singers, in the Keysville area. I ran into
Jim Wilkinson along the way. He was going to cover other areas and probably
has more to report.
I found one Dickcissel on the north side of Sharrett Road between the
railroad and Route 194. I crossed paths with Jim on Sixes Bridge Road just
east of Keysville Road. There were four Dickcisels there and another on the
west side of Keysville Road. My next one was on the northern extension of
Sixes Bridge Road, on the west side between Mumma Ford Road and Sixes
Bridge. Next there were three along the Keysville-Bruceville Road between
Keysville and the stream at the bottom of the hill, one singing from both
sides of the road. One was on the west side of the Keysville-Frederick
County Road between another stream crossing and the Monocacy River. Two more
were singing northwest of the intersection of Keysville Road and Hagerstown
Lane; three male Bobolinks were here also. The last one I heard was on
Baumgardner Road S just south of Bullfrog Road. This is the most Dickcissels
I have seen here in one foray. I did not have time to check the many other
sites where I have seem them in the past.
I saw two Red-headed Woodpeckers this morning. One was on a utility pole
on Keysville Road just north of Sixes Bridge Road and the other was on
Baumgardner Road S just north of the Piney Creek bridge.
I noted Grasshopper Sparrows at several places along the way but no
Vesper or Savannah Sparrows. I also saw two Kestrels, one on the
Keysville-Frederick County Road and the other on Route 194. A rather poor
showing for all these species though I was concentrating on Dickcissels.
