Hi all,

I took a ride this morning to the Taneytown area to look for Dickcissels and Red-headed Woodpeckers and managed to spot a few of each. There was one very cooperative male Dickcissel on Sixes Bridge Rd., on the southeast corner of the intersection with Keysville Rd. He was singing loudly from the tip-top of a small oak tree at the edge of a corn field just off the side of the road. There were at least two more singing in the immediate are and a couple more a little farther along down the hill if you continue east along Sixes Bridge Rd, and at least one Red-headed Woodpecker was visible flying between a couple snags at the bottom of the hill before the road bends to the right into the woods. I also saw two adults and one juvenile Red-headed Woodpecker on the north end of Walnut Grove Rd., along the small right angle section before it hits Frock Rd. The adults were hawking for flying insects, much like the Eastern Kingbird in their vicinity. The fledgeling stayed in a tree by the roadside and the adults took turns taking short forays low over the field, then returning to the tree to feed him. A couple photos of a male Dickcissel and one of the adult Woodpeckers are here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27381338@N03/5874232886/in/photostream/
