Morning all,
The Grasshopper Sparrow which has been present for some time here in the field next door, was still singing this morning, forlornly looking for a mate. It has been seen or heard since May 15th. Also, while out this morning watering the vegetable garden, I heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo calling from very close. I did an imitation of the call and it flew out from a tree near the garden and continued to fly across the field to the far woods. This species has been very scarce here this year.

Last evening, I sat out on the deck till almost dark, looking for bats. I think I saw a single bat flying over the neighbors field near where the GRSP has been singing. When I went over to the fence to look again, it had disappeared. This is my first bat this spring/summer. When I came in I read an article on WNS in the new issue of The Wildlife Professional (the magazine of The Wildlife Society), entitled Shedding Light on an Epidemic, How White Nose Syndrome May Impact Bat Reproduction. Needless to say, it was very disturbing.
