I decided to check out the Mellwood Rd Dickcissel this morning about 10:30.
When I got out of the car at the spot I heard the Dickcissel right away, but
rather distant. A short walk to the south soon had him right over my head in a
tree. But before that, as I was standing at the spot where the chunks of
concrete block the drive, I heard a familiar "bink bink" sound. At firt I wrote
it off as a weird Barn Swallow call (there were dozens of them), but then I saw
a bird flying that appeared to be uttering the notes. I got the bins on him and
could see it was a full breeding-plumaged Bobolink! I followed him till he
landed and saw him sitting in a shrub for a short while. Also, I walked up the
blocked lane a ways and confirmed that there was a second Dickcissel singing
there. Also heard Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, Willow Flycatcher and
Bobwhite.
