Bruce Peterjohn came to my house today for our first day of hummingbird
banding for the season. We banded from about 7:15 to 12:15. It was an
unbelievable day. Our previous record for number of birds caught in one
day was 49 and that was in August of last year with many hatch year
birds present. Today we shattered that record with 61 different hummers
caught - 48 new birds and 13 returns. And these were all adults birds -
no hatch year birds yet. The breakdown was:
New Birds - 35 males and 13 females
Recaptures - 4 males and 9 females
Several of the females were carrying an egg, so breeding is still going on.

The eagle looked down on the river below
And he wrapped his wings round him and he fell like a stone
And the big salmon fought but the talons held true
And he shuddered as the world turned from silver to blue
