Hi All,

This is where eBird shines!  If you want to see where Summer Tanagers have been seen in the State:

Go to ebird.org
Click on "Explore Data"
Then, click on "Bar Charts"
On the drop down menu, choose "Maryland"
to the right, click on "entire region"
Scroll down and click on "Continue" at the bottom of the page.
Now, you have a list (bar chart) of all the bird observations included since 1900 in Maryland.
Choose a species, e.g. Summer Tanager, and click on it.
This will give you a map of Maryland with many markers
Usually there will be too many to make sense of the map without zooming in.
Red markers mean observations are at least 30 days old, yellow markers are less than 30 days old.
Going back to the bar chart you can choose to see observations during different periods of the years, specific months, years, species, and locations.

When planning a trip to a specific birding location (anywhere in the world) you can check out what is traditionally seen that time of year or has been seen recently.  This of course should not replace more detailed information available in the birding community like MDOsprey, but can be quite useful if you don't have time, or you don't get enough info. from a listserv.

Good Birding, and keep reporting on eBird!

Hi Ospreyers --

Aaron asked me about Summer Tanagers and I must confess I am not
sure where to suggest, now -- I used to see them when I lived in Calvert
Co. and of course years ago both Sugarloaf Mt. and Great Falls Park VA
supported a few breeders, but now...?

If you have any specific locations for birds that might be doable for him
in
a half-day from Silver Spring, please email him directly...

Thanks,

Hello Gail,

I have a quick question for you.   My family is planning to spend this
upcoming weekend in Silver Spring before we head out to Chincoteague
next week (which I'm sure will be wonderful birding.)  Time may be
tight, and I'm not sure if my family will indulge me since we're going to
be doing so much birding during the week, but maybe I can get up
early and get out for a few hours Saturday or Sunday morning.

So, given my limited ability to bird, in the nearby area, what would
be my most likely bet for a place to possibly see summer tanagers?

I hope your summer has been great.

Thanks!

Aaron
