Yesterday Jon Ranson and I birded Swan Creek.

The MARBLED GODWIT was not present. A good selection of peeps and other shorebirds were present in the northern dredge cell; fewer in the southern.

I really believe that we located the BAIRDS SANDPIPER, but this bird was not in the cells. It was in the mudflat on the east side of the walking trail, across from the observation platform. We stopped to look at a CATTLE EGRET there, and saw this location was drawing a few sandpipers. At one point there were 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS together, feeding. They flew, and we left. On our return walk, we saw a group of peeps fly into that area. One was larger, and loosely associated with the flying flock. The others flew over the mudflat, but this larger one dropped out and began to feed. It certainly matched the description of the BAIRD's and didn't match the WESTERN SANDPIPERS we'd seen on the flats. I'm still not strong on shorebirds, and I've never seen a Baird's, so there is room for some error - but I'm certain enough to "call" the bird.

We were put on an AMERICAN GOLDFINCH nest by a traveler from Ohio, and got a really nice look at a bird sitting on the nest.

My favorite birds for the day were a "family" of five LITTLE BLUE HERONS. Two were in adult plumage, one was in almost adult feather - just a few little white feathers on the body. One was dark blue, with bright white outer and inner primaries and a few white body feathers, making him/her a spectacular looking bird. The last was almost all white, with the central primaries dark blue and a few dark blue body feathers - another spectacular bird!

Joanne

Short lunch time stop offered up one Upland Sandpiper. I'd have stuck around to
look for more, but work beckons.

Someone left something quite valuable near one of the observation areas, next to
the fence, South of the main terminal. I have it. If you'd like to be reunited
with it, send me an email.

Good Birding,
