This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Thursday, August 11, at 11:30 PM.

Top birds this week are BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK in VA, MISSISSIPPI
KITES in VA, HUDSONIAN GODWIT in DE, BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS in MD, and RUFF in
DE.

Other birds of interest include COMMON MERGANSER, WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS,
WHITE IBISES, shorebirds including AMERICAN AVOCETS, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, and
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER.

The wildlife loop at Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA, hosted a
BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK on Aug 3. At least 7 MISSISSIPPI KITES were
seen in the Falls Church/Burke/Springfield area of Fairfax Co, VA, during
Aug 6-8. They seemed to be centered near Braddock Rd and Rolling Rd. At
Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co DE, a HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen in Raymond Pond on
Aug 6. In MD, BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were spotted Aug 3 at Swan Creek Wetland,
Anne Arundel Co, and Aug 7 at the Hurlock WWTP in Dorchester Co. On Aug 5, a
RUFF put in an appearance at Taylor's Gut, Kent Co DE.

A very early COMMON MERGANSER showed up at Paper Mill Flats on Aug 2.
Over the Chesapeake Bay, in Somerset and Dorchester Counties, several
WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS were observed on Aug 6. WHITE IBISES were seen
scattered widely throughout the reporting area, including Jefferson Co WV
(Aug 3), Allegany Co MD (Aug 2), Prime Hook NWR in Kent Co DE (Aug 7), and
at least two at Lilypons, Frederick Co MD (Aug 7,8).

The AMERICAN AVOCET at Swan Creek Wetland, Anne Arundel Co MD on Aug 5 was a
surprise, but the 700 AMERICAN AVOCETS seen Aug 2 in Raymond Pond, Bombay
Hook NWR, must have been a lovely sight. An even dozen UPLAND SANDPIPERS
seen Aug 8 along Oland Rd, Frederick Co MD, was also remarkable. Three
MARBLED GODWITS were spotted at Assateague Island National Seashore,
Worcester Co MD, on Aug 2, and two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were found Aug 7
at Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co MD.

Finally, an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was photographed Aug 2 in Carroll Co MD,
just south of the PA state line on Krider's Schoolhouse Rd.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey, VA-Bird,
West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports before midnight Monday, identify
