Hi All,
Just a few birds of note for some short trips out this week.
Did a dinner time drive of Southwest Area Park in Southwest Baltimore on Thurday . Had large gathering of about 50 Chimney Swift , 30 Laughing gulls circleling the river area, 1 Osprey wondering where its nest blew to. 2 Great Egret
Went to Hughes Hollow and Violettes Lock today with Eileen Wise . My first time at these. Most bugs ive seen all summer and most ive ever seen in one place. Hundreds of Blue Tipped ? damsels and many different dragonflys and grasshoppers. Most exciting were 2 Twelve spot dragonflys and a Zebra Swallowtail .
Few birds found . No Black Tern seen. Surprised to not see any Terns.
Saw a few Green Heron , Great Blue Heron, Hummingbird, Redtailed Hawk , Yellow billed Cuckoo,
This evening i just happened to catch a congregation of Chimney Swift as i was doing a turn around near the Water Tower in Curtis Bay . I pulled over did a watch to see if i could see what Chimney they were going to use for evening Roost. I had done another watch in the early summer near Pennington ave and i come to believe that they used many different chimneys in Curtis Bay Pennington Ave area.
I estimated at least 50 swarming around between 8 and 830 then some finally started shooting in the chimney of the Curtis Bay Elementary school. Almost no light and watching the area with Binoculars when there appeared a larger bird swarming with the Swifts. It flew around a few times and then landed on the small stanchion next to the Water Tower. After only a few seconds it flew in my directions and dissappeared. Im pretty sure this had to be a Merlin. . Finally counted 33 Chimney Swift shoot into the School chimney around 830 . Id suppose they will use this same chimney every night till heading south . So hoping to get to see them another night .
