Hi Everyone,
Early this morning (27 Aug 2011) Dan Small and I birded Taylor's Island in Dorchester County for a few hours. Later we met Jim Brighton for some Wicomico birding. Finally we all stood in the rain at the Hurlock WWTP (Dorchester) before calling it a day.
We'd hoped to have a few migrant warblers on Taylor's Island, but found only one American Redstart. An interesting sight was a group of 46 Eastern Kingbirds clustered on a few adjacent wires as the first rain of the day began to fall.
Afterwards, we watched the Bay from the end of Punch Island Rd on Taylor's Island from 7:55-10:20 am. Highlights included:
Brown Pelican--32
Common Tern--5
Forster's Tern--82
Royal Tern--7
Caspian Tern--2
Black Tern--one group of 6 flying south
Our most exciting birds in Wicomico--and of the day--were 5 BLACK TERNS at the Log Cabin Rd turf farm--a county bird for all 3 of us! Wicomico's turf farms are already nice and soggy with good puddles and should have nice shorebird habitat for at least a few days after the storm passes. We also had a COMMON TERN with 34 Royal Terns on one of the jetties at the Cedar Hill Marina in Wicomico. A flock of 9 Pectoral Sandpipers was near one of the ponds at the Plantations (opposite Wright's Market).
Highlights at Hurlock were 21 BLACK TERNS, a ROYAL TERN, and a Blue-winged Teal.
Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings! Good luck with the weather and have fun,
Ron Gutberlet
