Jim Wilson inspired me to share my backyard experience in Silver Spring. On
Friday morning the backyard feeders were crazy. The feeders were full with
birds waiting all around for their turn. I had all of the regulars, but this
time, I had all of the regulars at one time. The trees were just loaded.
Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, cardinals, Carolina wrens, downeys,
red-bellies, robins, mourning doves, grackles, starlings and house sparrows
were around in abundance. I joked that I would have to refill the feeders
when I got home from work. By 6:00 pm when I got home from work the back
yard was dead. There is almost always something hanging around the feeders
in the evening, but on Friday I never saw or heard a bird.

Saturday morning was more of the same. I didn't see or hear a single bird.
That continued all day. This morning I was up at 7:00 and surprised that
nothing was even calling in the neighborhood. Finally at 8:30 am a hatcher
year red-belly showed up at our peanut feeder. By 8:45 the birds were slowly
streaming in -- including a hummer and things were back to normal.
