Hi all.
I took my kayak out of Perryville Town Park and headed southward into the heavy sav grasses on the flats. I was surrounded by Black Terns everywhere. They would come and go and it was like they dropped off the planet when they left. Then all of a sudden they would reappear. I had 17 in a flock feeding around me at one time, then a flock of 9 over near Havre de Grace, and a flock of 6 more over toward Elk Neck. There would be singles and doubles occasionally as well.
Let me tell you how hard it is to photograph those little suckers from a kayak. They are so buoyant turning and stopping and going up and down. I was as close as 10 feet away and I couldn't get a good shot. Some turned out ok. One of the cool ones is a flock of 9 that shot way up into the air and I thought they were going to just fly away, but came back down and buzzed right by me and started picking at the grasses again. They act like storm petrels on caffeine.
