This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 6 at noon. 

Top bird this week was SWALLOW-TAILED KITE* in VA.

Birds of interest are waders including WHITE-FACED IBIS*, MISSISSIPPI KITE,
shorebirds, FRANKLIN'S GULL, terns, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
flycatchers, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, warblers, and BOBOLINK.

One SWALLOW-TAILED KITE*, the one with the radio transmitter, continued to
be seen through Sept 3 flying over a farm field in Campbell Co, VA, about
two miles from Gladys, off Long Island Road, Rte. 761. The SWALLOW-TAILED
KITE was often joined by one or two MISSISSIPPI KITES.

A TRICOLORED HERON was seen Aug 30 at Sandy Point SP, Anne Arundel Co, MD.
One was also found Sept 3 at Port Tobacco Marina, Charles Co, MD.

A YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were the highlights
during a Sept 5 visit to Bles Park, Loudoun Co, VA.

A WHITE IBIS was seen Sept 2nd and 3rd in Jug Bay, Anne Arundel Co from
Jackson Landing, Prince George's Co, MD.

A WHITE-FACED IBIS* was seen Sept 1 at the end of the Life of the Forest
trail at Assateague Island National Seashore, Worcester Co, MD.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was among the many birds seen Aug 30 on a trip to
Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD. AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERs and RED KNOTS
were reported from the Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA. On Sept 3 or 4 at
one time or another AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS, an UPLAND SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS, and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were found at the sod farm on
Bristow Rd near the Manassas Airport, Prince William Co, VA. Five AMERICAN
AVOCETS were found Aug 30 at the Swan Creek/Cox Creek dredge containment
facility in northern AA Co, MD; one was still there on Aug 31. A RUDDY
TURNSTONE and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were found Sept 3 and 4 in Charles
Co, MD at the end of Morgantown Rd. A RUDDY TURNSTONE, two SANDERLINGS, and
a STILT SANDPIPER were among the shorebirds seen at Swan Creek on Sept 5. 

Several RED KNOTS were seen over the weekend at Assateague, Worcester Co,
MD. A RED KNOT was the highlight of a visit to Swan Creek on Sept 5. Three
SANDERLINGS were seen in the puddles at RFK Stadium in DC on Aug 31 and Sept
1. SANDERLINGS and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen at Staunton View
Public Use Area, Mecklenburg Co, VA, on Aug 30 and 31; two BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS were seen there on Sept 3 and nine were counted there on Sept 5.
A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen Sept
2 at the Summit Hall Turf Farm from the C&O Canal, Montgomery Co, MD.
A juvenile UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen Aug 31 north of Kiptopeke St Park,
Northampton Co, VA. An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen Sept 3 at Shirley
Plantation, New Kent Co, VA. An unidentified phalarope and a RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE were seen Sept 1 at Jackson Landing. A probable RED-NECKED
PHALAROPE was also seen there on Sept 2.

A FRANKLIN'S GULL was found Sept 4 at Bombay Hook NWR, DE.

A GULL-BILLED TERN was found Sept 4 at Bombay Hook NWR. A ROYAL TERN was
seen Sept 1 flying over Lake Artemesia, Prince George's Co, MD.
Four ROYAL TERNS and a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO were reported Sept 3 from
Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA. BLACK TERNS continued to show up at a
lot of different locations this past week.

COMMON NIGHTHAWKS continued to be reported from several locations this past
week, including in the lights above the towers at Tyson's Corner, Fairfax
Co, VA. 250 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew over Rock Creek Hills Park, Kensington,
MD Sept 3. On Sept 5 over 200 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flew over the parking lot at
the intersection of Elk Run Rd, Co Rd 806, and Courthouse Rd, Co Rd. 609,
Fauquier Co, VA.

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were found in
numerous locations this past week. Some of the sightings included an
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER perched on a snag below the dam at Centennial Park,
Howard Co, MD on Aug 31; an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER Sept 2 at Mint Springs
Park, near Crozet, Albemarle Co, VA; and both species on Sept 4 at Governor
Bridge NA, Prince George's Co, MD. 

A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO were seen Aug 30 at
Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, Howard Co, MD and again on Sept 4. Two
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO were found Sept 3 at
Leesylvania SP, Prince William Co, VA.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was found Sept 2 at Schoolhouse Pond, Upper Marlboro,
Prince George's Co, MD. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was also found Sept 5 at
Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD.

On Sept 4 a COMMON RAVEN flew over Fred Crabtree Park, Fairfax Co, VA and
two COMMON RAVENS flew over Soldiers Delight Natural Area, Baltimore Co, MD.


Warbler migration picked up this past week with a major fall-out on Aug 30.
Rock Creek Park, DC, continued to be one of the more productive locations
throughout the week though several other locations were also productive on
the 30th with 14 species at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on Aug
30 and 15 species at Black Walnut Point, Tilghman Island, Talbot Co, MD, the
same day. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was seen Aug 31 at Middle Patuxent
Environmental Area. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was reported at the Ivy Creek
Natural Area, Albemarle Co, VA, on Sept 2, and another on Sept 4 along
Stoney Point Pass, a gravel road in northeast Albemarle Co. A CONNECTICUT
WARBLER was found Aug 30 at Middle Patuxent Environmental Area. A MOURNING
WARBLER was among the several warblers seen Aug 30 at Rock Creek Park's
maintenance yard. A MOURNING WARBLER was reported at Adkins Arboretum,
Caroline Co, MD Sept 2. A MOURNING WARBLER was identified Sept 3 at Severn
Run on Dicus Mill Rd, Millersville, Anne Arundel Co, MD, WILSON'S WARBLERS
were seen at several locations.

BOBOLINKS, sometimes in large numbers (1500 passing over the Kiptopeke
Hawkwatch on Sept 2 and 800 there on Sept 5), were reported migrating
through the area from several different locations this past week.

West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
