The count could use a few more participants (although 8 areas are already spoken for by c. 11-12 observers). If anyone is interested I would prefer they furnish double coverage of areas I will be covering. No one sees all the birds, and different groups in the same area always see birds the others miss. The highest counts or unique species would be the ones recorded. Three such areas are: central Blackwater N.W.R. (including Maple Dam Road-Shorter's Wharf [which I will NOT be covering], but, note that Wildlife Drive is closed except for the initial stretch between the entrance and refuge HQ), Hooper's Island, and Elliott Island. Another option would be to walk any of the 4 refuge trails (which I will also NOT be covering) and keep separate lists for those. If interested please contact me at this e-mail address, harryarmistead at hotmail dot com, or 215-248-4120 before 10 A.M. this coming Wed., or else at 410-745-2764 afterwards. The appropriate checklist is easily found on www.mdbirds.org under the heading "species counts." I'll have my cell phone on the day of the count: 215-913-4785. The weather forecast is promising. Best to all. - Harry Armistead.
