This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 13,
at 10 AM.

Top birds this week are WILSON'S STORM-PETREL in DE, WHITE IBIS in DC,
WESTERN KINGBIRD in VA, and GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in DC.

Other birds of interest include raptors, shorebirds, GULL-BILLED TERN,
SANDWICH TERN, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, COMMON RAVEN, CONNECTICUT
WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and LARK SPARROW.

On Sept 9, a WILSON'S STORM-PETREL was seen from the Cape Henlopen
Hawk Watch, Sussex Co DE. Rare for DC, an immature WHITE IBIS has been
seen Sept 9-12 in Kenilworth Park, SE DC. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was
spotted on Sept 10 in Northampton Co VA, along Route 600 near Bulls
Drive.

Also in DC, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was observed on Sept 9 in Rock
Creek Park, NW DC, along Sherrill Rd.

Single WHITE IBIS were seen in MD, at Swan Creek Wetland on Sept 9 and
at Lakeside Business Park, Harford Co on 9/11, but the 674 WHITE IBIS
reported at Eastern Shore of VA NWR on Sept 9 is quite amazing.

Raptor migration is well underway. Numerous OSPREY have been observed
from all the hawk watches, with a high count of 114 on Sept 12 at Cape
Henlopen Hawk Watch. BROAD-WINGED HAWKS have been increasing all week
at the mountain ridge hawk watches, and have begun showing up at the
coastal hawk watches in the last 3 days. An immature MISSISSIPPI KITE
was observed at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co MD, on Sept 11, and a
Northern Goshawk was seen from Turkey Point Hawk Watch, Cecil Co MD,
on Sept 11.

On Sept 11, an UPLAND SANDPIPER was spotted in Kent Co DE, along the
entrance road to Bombay Hook NWR, near Rte 9. HUDSONIAN GODWITS have
been seen throughout most of the reporting area, with counts of 50+ in
Culpeper Co VA along Newby's Shop Rd Sept 7-9, at Woodward Turf Farm,
Fauquier Co VA, on Sept 9, and in Kent Co DE Sept 10-12, along Kitt's
Hummock Rd, opposite the entrance to John Dickenson Plantation.
MARBLED GODWITS haven't been as numerous, but one was seen in a
surprising place: Hampshire Rd Turf Farm, Wicomico Co MD, on Sept 11.

Several GULL-BILLED TERNS and one SANDWICH TERN were observed along
Whitehall Neck Road, Kent Co DE, on Sept 10, and two SANDWICH TERNS
were seen the same day at Skimmer Island, Ocean City MD (Worcester
Co).

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was spotted at Assateague Island NS,
Worcester Co MD, on Sept 11. Rare in the coastal plain, a COMMON RAVEN
was spotted at Swan Creek Wetland on Sept 10.

More than two dozen species of warbler were reported. In addition to
the GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER mentioned above, there was a CONNECTICUT
WARBLER at Rock Creek Park on Sept 11, at the maintenance yard.
CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were seen on Sept 10, one at Assateague, and
another at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Island 1, Northampton Co
VA. Northampton Co hosted two LARK SPARROWS on Sept 7, along Rte 600
outside Eastern Shore of VA NWR. Single LARK SPARROWS were spotted in
Kent Co DE, along Parson's Point Rd near Bombay Hook NWR on Sept 10,
and along Port Mahon Rd, Little Creek WMA on Sept 12.

Most of this week's reports have been gleaned from the MDOsprey,
VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.

The Audubon Sanctuary Shop (301-652-3606,
http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=511) is an excellent
source for guidebooks and many other nature-related titles.

To report bird sightings, e-mail your report to
or call 301-652-1088. Please post reports
