It was a nice morning for migrants at Lake Needwood today. I had the
good fortune of meeting Diane Ford midway through the walk and we
checked the fence line and fields together near Needwood Mansion.
Diane spotted a kettle of about 30 Broad-winged hawks flying low over
the pond near the mansion, which afforded good looks at the birds.
Later Diane located a Swainson's Thrush as well as several Veery and a
Wood Thrush foraging near the ground in thickets near the lake. A
number of warblers were out, with Black-Throated Blue, Northern
Parula, and Black & White warblers in relative abundance. A Palm
warbler sighted near Needwood road was my first of the fall. The full
