Sorry for the false alarm, the bird is definitely a Stilt Sandpiper. The bird is missing a large chunk of his upper chest.
When I first found it, I could see a lot of seemingly red feathers on the lower belly, but that turned out to be blood from the severe chest wound. It was also not moving at all, just standing facing to the right. In this posture, it really seemed like a Curlew Sandpiper to me being rather long-bodied, standing tall, white supercilium, and long downcurved bill. Stilt Sandpiper was my only hangup, but I thought it was too long-bodied. Once it started moving it looked more like a Stilt Sandpiper and began to feed regularly, so I think the bird is okay. Eventually it moved closer and we could see the greenish legs, confirming it was not a Curlew.
Still a very interesting bird, I've never seen a shorebird missing it's chest before!

I just got a call from Matt Hafner, who has a strong candidate for CURLEW
ANDPIPER at Swan Creek in northern Anne Arundel Co. It is in the north dredge

njured, possibly severely.
