This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report was completed Tuesday, September 27, at 8:00 AM. 

Top birds this week are FRANKLIN'S GULL in MD and RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in VA.

Other birds of interest include ducks, WHITE IBIS, BROAD-WINGED HAWK, SORA,
shorebirds, PARASITIC JAEGER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, COMMON RAVEN,
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, warblers and sparrows.

A FRANKLIN'S GULL was seen at Prince Georges Community College in Largo,
Prince Georges Co, MD on Sep 23.

A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD visited a feeder near Lexington, Rockbridge Co, VA on
Sep 25.

Among the signs of changing seasons this week were the RING-NECKED DUCK and
RUDDY DUCK on McMillan Reservoir, Washington, DC.

A WHITE IBIS was at Kenilworth Park, Washington, DC on Sep 24. There were 81
WHITE IBIS on Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA on Sep 24. 

Raptor migration continued. The largest BROAD-WINGED HAWK count was 4260 at
Rockfish Gap near Waynesboro, VA on Sep 22. Increasing numbers of falcons,
especially MERLINS, were reported from coastal hawk watches.

A SORA was heard at Swan Harbor Farm in Havre de Grace, Harford Co, MD on
Sep 25. Another SORA was seen along the new boardwalk at Huntley Meadows
Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sep 25. At least 6 SORAS were found in the marsh at
Jug Bay Natural Area, Prince Georges Co, MD on Sep 24.

Three AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were seen at the Swan Creek facility, Anne
Arundel Co, MD on Sep 21. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and 106 RED KNOTS were
in a flock on Assateague Island, Worcester Co, MD on Sep 22. Three MARBLED
GODWITS and 49 RED KNOTS were at Castaways campground near Ocean City,
Worcester Co, MD on Sep 22. Another MARBLED GODWIT was spotted on Assateague
Island that day. Two MARBLED GODWITS were at Chincoteague NWR on Sep 24.

A juvenile PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from Assateague Island on Sep 25.
A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at McMillan Reservoir on Sep 21.
There were 81 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS on Assateague Island on Sep 22.

Another returning winter resident was a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER in Rock
Creek Park, Washington, DC on Sep 26.

A YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was found near Riley's Lock on the C&O Canal
Towpath, Montgomery Co, MD on Sep 24.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen at Meadowbrook Park, Howard Co, MD on Sep 25.

Two COMMON RAVENS flew over the Annapolis Junction Business Park in Anne
Arundel Co, MD on Sep 24.

GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was seen at Monticello Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sep 26,
at Huntley Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on Sep 25, and at Patterson Park,
Baltimore, MD on Sep 26.

The best hot spots for warblers this week were Leesylvania SP, Prince
William Co, VA with 18 species on Sep 25; Fort DuPont Park, Washington, DC,
Black Walnut Point, Talbot Co, MD, and Finzel Swamp, Garrett Co, MD each had
14 species on Sep 25. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was in Rock Creek Park,
Washington, DC on Sep 25. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found at the Swan Creek
facility on Sep 22. Another CONNECTICUT WARBLER was at Fort Smallwood Park,
Anne Arundel Co, MD on Sep 24. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was seen at the Bayside
campground on Assateague Island on Sep 25. A hybrid LAWRENCE'S WARBLER was
found at the Kiptopeke Banding Station, Northampton Co, VA on Sep 23. 

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW and a juvenile LARK SPARROW were at Bayside
campground on September 25.  A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found at Finzel,
Garrett Co, MD on Sep 25.
