Clay-colored Sparrow (Spizella pallida) (1)
- Reported Oct 04, 2011 23:50 by Andy Bernick
- Lower Senate Park, District of Columbia, District of Columbia
- Map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&t=p&z=13&q=38.8943229,-77.0079803&ll=38.8943229,-77.0079803
- Comments : "I observed the Clay-colored Sparrow in a small flock
with House Sparrows (8) and Field Sparrows (2). I have observed this
species several times in the past in VA, NJ, and NY. The Clay-colored
Sparrow had a brown streaked crown w/ light crown stripe, white
eyebrow and white malar stripe, light lores, cheek patch contrastingly
brown w/ dark edges, brownish rump, grayish/buff and unmarked
underparts. Bill color was pale/pinkish, different than the pink
Field Sparrow bill. This individual was noticeably smaller than the
accompanying house sparrows, and about the same/slightly smaller than
the accompanying Field Sparrows. I observed it from 11:55AM to
12:10PM, and again at 12:40 PM. The flock was feeding along a paved
path in a park parcel south of Union Station and east of Delaware Ave,
under azalea bushes adjacent to a lone pine tree in the center of the
parcel."
