After our surprising warbler fallout at Pennyfield Lock last Sunday, my
birding partner and I went back again this morning, mostly, as last Sunday,
for a walk up to Violette's.
Again we found lots of birds beginning in the parking lot. The best bird of
our walk was an adult, male Black-throated blue warbler, out in the sun, on
the mud flats along the far side of the canal drinking and bathing. We
watched him for about 5 minutes. We also had a very cooperative Common Raven
slowly soaring, low over the trees across the canal. This is not a common
bird to be seen there, so we were pleased at the nice look. Otherwise,
there were countless Yellow-rump warblers, seemingly everywhere. Mixed in
with the warblers we found many Ruby-crowned Kinglets as well. After our
walk, we found several Kinglets in the parking area; some were very close
and showed a nice red patch on the head. We also found two different
sub-adult Bald Eagles, three Red-tailed hawks, and an Osprey. The sky was
full of swifts during the entire walk, and Cormorants on the river, as
expected. A lovely morning to be out, and more birds than we expected.
