Ok, not really. But it sure felt like it! I was waiting for a bus at the
intersection of Connecticut Ave and Porter St in Cleveland Park at 10:30
tonight (right across the street from the Broadmoor roost) and I noticed a
flock of birds flying low in the street lights. As they got closer to me I
noticed that they were Chimney Swifts. They were flying in a very tight
flock of about 40 or so, just above the streetlights, until they reached the
intersection when they began swooping down to eye level. At one point the
flock flew directly into me, with birds flapping all over me, and some
trying to land on the ground, before awkwardly taking off again. It was
pretty uncomfortable to say the least, but I was more intrigued by the
experience than anything. I can't say the others waiting for the bus were as
fascinated as I was! Definitely the closest encounter I'll ever have with
one (or fourty...) of these little guys.
