The bird had me working, too. It looked like a first winter bird to me. I
ultimately called it based on the facial markings and overall buff color,
especially in the flanks and breast.

One thing I realized when I looked at more guides at home is that there are
some of inconsistencies between field guides for these guys, particularly on
the back (and Sibley doesn't even have 1st year non-breeding). But based on
the Rising and Beadle sparrow guide, I'd definitely say 1st year.
