MDOsprey,

Howard County recently had its first Green Violetear at a private home in
Clarksville but unfortunately the bird has departed. The bird was first seen
Monday afternoon, 10/24 and departed about 7:19 a.m. Wednesday 10/26. This
was the third Green Violetear sighting in Maryland since August, assuming
that the Anne Arundel County, one feeding wonder, was a Violetear. The
Howard homeowner was very gracious in allowing a steady stream of people
visit their home and seeing this special bird. Since it was on private
property we did a slow release of the information including sending it out
to the Howard County Rare Bird Alert and other email lists from previous
Maryland rare bird alerts. We had hoped to post about the bird as the crowds
got managable but it was not to be.
There was an attempt to band the Howard bird on Tuesday morning but it
avoided the trap.
Thanks to all of the good sports who bought Girl Scout cookies from the
homeowners daughter.
It appears that these birds don't stay around very long. The two in NC were
only present for two days, the Cecil County bird for three days, and the
Howard bird for 42 hours.
The exciting news is that there are 1 to 3 Green Violetears somewhere out
there in Maryland, so clean and refill your hummingbird feeders. You could
be next.
