Several years ago, while driving west on US-50 just south of Bowie
at sundown, I approached such a murmuration which swerved very low.
From a distance I could see the flock flying across the highway, the
lowest of them only a few feet in altitude. I could see brake
lights
and cars wavering. When I arrived there moments later, there were
casualties all over the pavement. It seemed individuals were so
intent upon (mesmerized by?) staying with the flock that they lost
their normal serve-avoidance reflexes.
There is so much more to bird watching than just counting . . .
