Hi All,

This morning I took a quick stroll over to MacMillan Reservoir and was rewarded with a lot of Duck action.  I counted 52 Ring-necked Ducks at the far north end close to shore, along with a lone male Bufflehead.  Down in the far SE section a group of 8 Buffleheads and 8 Coots enjoyed shelter from the north winds.

Some gulls hung around, along with a pale herring gull that I wanted to turn into something better, but just couldn't make the leap to Glaucous or otherwise.

This flock of ducks has grown steadily over the last couple of weeks and their location can be predicted easily by the weather.  If the wind is from the South (or East, or even West) they will be hold up at the far southern end of the Reservoir (when a scope is helpful).  When the wind is from the North or Northwest, look for the waterfowl to be holding close to shore at the far north end of the Reservoir.

Parking is best had on the 500 block of Gresham Place, NW, across from Howard University Campus.  I live nearby and have never had any security concerns, but the neighborhood used to be shady.

Good Birding!

Jason Berry

P.S. I also had 3 Common Loons fly overhead around lunch time near DuPont Circle right after the rain passed!  I'd love to hear what other great birds were seen flying overhead while I was stuck in an office all afternoon!
