Lou Demouy, Helen Patton, Linda Friedland, Gerry Hawkins and I birded
a foggy Montgomery County by the Potomac this morning, November
21. The first bird we saw was a basic plumaged COMMON LOON by the
towpath bridge over Seneca Creek but the fog was so thick that we had
to wait 1-1/2 hours for it to clear enough to see right across the
river to Mr. Trump's golf course. When it did clear, we found 2
drake BUFFLEHEAD, 5 COMMON GOLDENEYE, 4 HOODED MERGANSER, another
COMMON LOON and 3 PIED-BILLED GREBE just above Violette's Lock. We
also found two WINTER WRENs singing loudly about 1/3 mile above
Riley's Lock. Woodpeckers were everywhere, with Downy and Hairy both
conspicuous, a few Red-bellied and Flickers, a heard Pileated and an
immature Yellow-belled Sapsucker. (We did not see Red-breasted
Merganser or Bonaparte's Gull, reported from Violettes by Dave
Czaplak later in the day.)
After Linda had to leave, we proceeded along Montevideo and Sugarland
Rds. and stopped along Sugarland about 1/2 mile west of Homestead
Farms when we heard WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWs singing. There were about
half a dozen there.
After a delicious lunch at the Mexican Grill in Poolesville, Helen,
Gerry and I stopped at L. M. Stevens Park in Poolesville in the hope
of finding some waterfowl in the deeper of the two ponds there. Once
again, this ordinary-looking suburban park came up trumps with an
impressive 10 waterfowl species -- Canada Goose, CACKLING GOOSE (a
particularly thick-necked individual), 3 AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, 10
MALLARD, 9 AMERICAN WIGEON, 7 GADWALL, 1 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3
RING-NECKED DUCK, a pair of REDHEAD, and single RUDDY DUCK.
Good Birding!
