I live in Baltimore City.  A few years ago it seemed all the House Finches disappeared - maybe from that eye disease that was going around....or even West Nile disease which really reduced the number of crows in the hood.   But about two/three years ago, they started coming back (both finches and crows) and I have a healthy gang of them again.  I have never had many Goldfinches at my feeders - seeing one is a real treat.........but I can go over one alley and find large flocks at someone else's feeders.  And yes, I keep my niger seed fresh.  Guess they don't like my alley.

I've also noticed significantly fewer of both species at my feeders, but I've seen more of each the last couple of days. TH

A real shortage of both species at my place near Easton also.  Two House
Finches around some of the time, and from 0 to 5 Goldfinch.  However in most
other years at this time of year there would be a dozen or more House
Finches and often 20 or more Goldfinch.  I'm beginning to worry.

Yes, the same is true in my yard. Both species used to be daily
visitors, but now I seldom even hear them flying over. Maybe I'd have
more finches if I could afford to keep a feeder filled with niger seed!

Let's see if the upcoming local Christmas Bird Counts tally
significantly fewer of these birds or not.
