This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, November 22, at
8:00 AM. 

Top birds this week are CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* in MD, CAVE SWALLOW in
VA, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER* in MD, and MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER* in
VA. 

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, HORNED GREBE, EARED GREBE,
WHITE IBIS, BALD EAGLE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK,  MARBLED GODWIT, SANDWICH
TERN, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE*, COMMON RAVEN, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER,
warblers, sparrows, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL.

The CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD* visiting a garden near Easton, Talbot Co, MD
since October 23 is still being seen. The garden is in a private
community where parking is limited and all viewing is from inside a
townhouse. Access can still be attained, but is by appointment only.
To arrange a time for a visit, phone the home owner at 410-822-1966;
she will provide directions to her home and instructions about
parking. Please be courteous and respectful. 

A juvenile CAVE SWALLOW was flying north near Magotha Rd, Northampton
Co, VA on Nov 17.

A BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER* was seen near the intersection of Wells
Rd and Pemberton Dr, near Salisbury, Wicomico Co, MD on Nov 20.

A probable immature female MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER* was found on
Station St., Hopewell, VA on Nov 20.

Waterfowl numbers continued to increase throughout the area. Two
CACKLING GEESE were on Chesapeake Farms, Rock Hall, Kent Co, MD on Nov
19. CACKLING GOOSE was also seen at Violette's Lock, C&O Canal,
Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 21 and at L. M. Stevens Park in  Poolesville,
Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 21. A possible BARNACLE GOOSE flew over
Randallstown, Baltimore Co, MD on Nov 20. Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS were
seen at the Ocean City jetty, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 18. 

Four HORNED GREBES were in the Potomac River near Hains Point,
Washington, DC on Nov 17. An EARED GREBE was at the Stuart's Draft
Waste Water Treatment Plant, Augusta Co, VA on Nov 16.

Nearly 300 WHITE IBIS were seen on Chincoteague NWR, Accomack Co, VA
on Nov 18.

Approximately 100 BALD EAGLES were an impressive sight at Conowingo
Dam, on the Harford/Cecil Co line in MD on Nov 19. The Cape Henlopen
Hawk Watch, Sussex Co, DE recorded its first ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK of the
season on Nov 19.

At least 50 MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Chincoteague NWR on Nov 18.
Three MARBLED GODWITS and a BLACK-NECKED STILT were at Raymond Pool,
Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co, DE on Nov 20; both species were seen again
on Nov 21. Eight MARBLED GODWITS were seen from Cataways Campground,
near Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 18.

A late SANDWICH TERN was spotted flying over Delaware Bay toward Cape
Henlopen on Nov 19.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was found in the Ashville development in Virginia
Beach, VA on Nov 19, 20, and 21. A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE* was seen in
Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, Loudoun Co, VA on Nov 20. A LOGGERHEAD
SHRIKE was seen on Bennetts Pier Rd, Kent Co, DE this week. Birders
must stay on the road and not enter the private property on either
side owned by Delaware Wild Lands.

COMMON RAVENS continue their forays into the urbanized western shore.
There were multiple sightings in Bethesda, Montgomery Co, MD on Nov 21
and four RAVENS were seen in Elklick Woodlands in western Fairfax Co,
VA on Nov 20.

Lingering songbird migrants this week included a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER
at Hickory Point, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 16; a NASHVILLE WARBLER at
Assateague SP, Worcester Co, MD on Nov 20; two NORTHERN PARULAS at
Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA on Nov 20; and a CAPE MAY WARBLER at the
Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch on Nov 19.

A wide variety of sparrows continued to be reported from a number of
locations. An AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was one of the 10 sparrow species
at the Irvine Nature Center, Howard Co, MD on Nov 18. An AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW was found along Hibler Rd in Loudoun Co, VA on Nov 19. VESPER
SPARROW was seen at two spots in Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co,
VA on Nov 19. A LARK SPARROW was in the north end of the campground at
Assateague SP on Nov 19.

A possible WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen at North Point SP,
Baltimore Co, MD on Nov 21.

VA-Bird, West Virginia Birding List, and DE-Birds list servers.
