Tom and all,

David Quammen doesn't like the word "tame". He prefers "Ecologically naive."
Nonetheless, I experienced the ultimate today. I was taking a brief walk
around the building where I work in Towson at lunch I didn't notice the
RED-TAILED HAWK next to the walk eating a squirrel until I was right next
to it - about 3' away. He looked up at me and then went right back to
eating. And this was a full adult bird, probably a male. I looked out from
our third floor conf room half an hour later and he was still down there
chomping away.

As for the deer in Shenandoah, I can attest to that. Camped at Matthews Arm
one year on a fishing trip and got up during the night to go. The restroom
was diagonally across the road. Halfway across I literally bumped right into
a doe. Had to shove it aside to get where I was going. Just glad it wasn't a
bear. Mighta shoved back.
