I just wanted to thank Dan Haas for bringing up the idea of twitter and getting me interested. By the time I emailed him about it, he had decided the MD rare bird alert wasn't working out the way he had hoped, but he was still very helpful and encouraged me to go on and get an account. He said it was very easy, and linked you to a lot of interesting bird news and info--and he was right on both counts. I started by clicking on the ebird twitter link, and was quickly walked thru the process--on my computer, NOT on my cell phone. Turns out, even twitter says that's the easiest way to do it, and then link the phone later. I went on and did the phone link but I think I need to download an app in order to use it easily there, so I'm not bothering with it til I call Credomobile (my phone co., which has awesome customer service) to walk me thru it. Looking at things on my computer is really easy, and so far a lot of fun.

I came across something about another fun thing--the Big Year movie. Going to see it with other people, including Greg Miller, out in Columbia was hugely enjoyable. I found a twitter with a link to an Atlantic Monthly article about John Vanderpoel and his attempt this year to break Sandy Komito's record of 745. I then found his blog about the experience--he's up to 734 as of today! He refers to Greg Miller a couple of times in the blog, saying his finances are closer to Greg's than to the other two birders in '98. You can find his blog with a google blog search (at Google, you click on "more" to get to the blog search, then just put in his name). I started back at the beginning, and set out to read it all--I may finish by the time his big year does! Anyway, after our having such a good time with the movie, and it's local tie-in thru Greg, I thought some people who hadn't heard about this 2011 effort already might like to know, and follow the rest of his attempt. The blog is good reading, and comes with some photographs, too.
