I had a chance to look closely at the Black-headed Gull at Hunt Valley
this morning. I believe it is a second-winter bird. I could see nothing in
the plumage that was not adult-like but the bill struck me as being more
immature-like. It was orange-red with the distal third blackish. If there
are any plumage variations they would be difficult to detect in the field
and may only show up in photos of the spread wing. And there are easy photo
opportunities.
